cozy + monochromatic living room

it has taken me a little (ok, a lot) longer than expected to reveal the new modest living space, but today is the day!!!! a nice little break from all the holiday recipes & decor content flooding our feeds. while we decorated the living room in the summer, i kept holding off on shooting the space because i wanted to wait until it was perfect. then i realized it will never be perfect because that doesn't exist when it comes to decorating. so today, i am sharing with you our almost perfect living room! enjoy this clean & minimal space because this weekend it will be decked out with garlands, stockings & a fresh cut tree.

first, let's talk couches! our previous living room sofa was our condo sofa, so the size never truly fit the space. after all, our house is just a little bit bigger than our condo. plus, the fabric was a dark (almost blue) grey which i felt didn't go with the wallpaper & paint. we knew we wanted to add a sectional for comfort & i immediately fell in love with rove concepts luca sectional the second i saw it in a magazine. it was the style & size i had been searching for, PLUS you can customize the fabric. i quickly ordered the free swatches online & stared at them for weeks. i wanted a sofa that was going to lighten the space, but i also had to take into consideration that we have two entitled dogs. for that reason alone, white was off the table. we finally settled on the "oyster plush weave", which was almost the exact colours of our walls. the perfect warm grey tone. justin thought i was weird for picking a sofa that matched the walls, but he shut his mouth once it arrived in the space. because we were going with a custom fabric, we also decided to order rove concepts luca armchair in oyster plush weave too. this chair is the comfiest chair ever! it's my "work from home" chair where i answer emails, write blog post & so on. for the throw pillows, i added a slight pop of colour with that one solid dusty pink pillow. the solid colour pillows are 100% linen, made by rough linen & the tweed wool ones are made in ireland by rejuvenation.

secondly, we needed a new area rug because.. dogs. i will leave it at that. i wanted a rug that would go with both the couches & wallpaper, meaning it had to be simple. however, i didn't want just a solid colour rug because that would be boring. gus moderns avro rug to the rescue! it is the softest oatmeal colour made of new zealand wool, which features multiple grey tones throughout. it ties the whole room together & really helps brighten the space. plus, i love the diagnol lines that match both the wallpaper & fireplace screen. it is one of those little design details everyone notices!

thirdly, we wanted to bring in a wood element to offset all the white & grey tones, so i chose rove concept's lassee coffee table & open shelving to match. i kept the open shelving simple & clean, but i have no doubt over time these shelves will fill up with interior design books + cookbooks. for now, it is the space i display my favourite handmade items & vases.

lastly, the lighting! i can't forget about the lighting. this space actually didn't have an outlet for a light fixture when we moved in, just the pot lighting. while justin didn't think it needed a fixture, i think every room deserves gorgeous lighting. to me, lighting is like jewlery for the house! it is one of the first things guest notice when they step into our house, which makes me happy knowing that all the details i put into the space don't go unnoticed. now back to that light fixture! it is the cedar & moss mixed globe three-light multipendant from rejuvenation, obviously. it is such a show stopper & matches the rejuvenation cedar & moss floor lamp. we had a local electrician install the outlet for it, which meant we had to patch & paint the ceiling. however, all that extra work was worth it. if you spot our entry light in the background of the one image, it matches that one too. can you tell i am just slightly obsessed with rejuvenation's lighthing?

one more thing i want to mention before i am done rambling.. that wool weaving by maggie pate of nade studio! maggie is one of my favourite people to follow on social, as she creates the most beautiful handmade pieces custom dyed using food waste. i have wanted one of her weaves for years & when i saw her post this one for sale i knew it had to be mine. could the colours be more perfect for our house? plus, i love how large it is. while you can't find this exact weaving, she is constantly making one-of-a-kind pieces & other home goods. if you are looking for a special holiday gift, do check out her online shop here! you are going to fall in love with her work.

cranberry, orange + oatmeal streusel muffins

yes you read that title correctly! cranberry, orange, oatmeal AND streusel muffins. as if oatmeal muffins couldn't possibly get any better, i figured why not put an orange scented streusel on top? afterall, streusel makes everything better & when it's the holiday season calories don't count! these muffins taste & smell like a dream christmas morning, meaning you should probably make these on christmas eve. when it is time to wake up & open presents, these little muffins will be waiting for you!

i just love the tartness cranberries bring to any baked good. whenever people tell me they don't like cranberries, i honestly cannot wrap my brain around it! they are sweet & tart all at the same time, what is there not to love?! to make these muffins i used *bob's red mills rolled oats & turbinado sugar. the turbinado sugar brings a much more natural sweetness to the muffins, with a little crunch. the crystals are much coarser than granulated sugar, so it makes a big impact to the streusel. for the orange flavour, the fresh orange zest is a must! so much of the scent, oils & flavour of the oranges is in that zest. be careful to only grate the orange zest & not the white layer, as that can become quite bitter. enjoy!

glazed pomegranate + chocolate bundt cake

happy black friday, but more importantly.. happy birthday to my dad & i!!!!!!

i hope all my american friends had an amazing thanksgiving with friends & family. i am just a little jealous of all the turkey & stuffing i didn't get to eat yesterday. every year my dad & i's birthday falls on or around thanksgiving, so there is a lot to celebrate this time of the year. i will be spending the day black friday shopping with my mom (we can call it christmas shopping, but it usually ends up being a treat yo self kind of day if you know what i mean), followed by a dinner event with matty matheson! i can't wait to see what he is going to cook up tonight. i know it is going to be delicious! almost delicious enough to make up for the fact that us canadian's didn't get to celebrate our thanksgiving yesterday too!

anyways, enough about birthday celebrations & more about this beautiful bundt cake. now that american thanksgiving is over it is officially the christmas season! we started decorating the house yesterday & the stockings are hung. i've also began my holiday baking which includes this glazed pomegranate + chocolate bundt cake. how perfect is pairing pomegranate with chocolate? but what makes this cake even more perfect is pairing the cake with balzacs winter blend coffee. not only do i like to serve this dessert with a hot cup of seasonal coffee, but the winter blend coffee is used in the cake batter as well. you should never make chocolate cake without a hint of coffee in the batter as it helps enhance the flavour of the cocoa powder. this results in a more chocolaty tasting cake, plus it matches the flavour profiles of balzacs winter blend coffee, with its notes of sweet plum & dark chocolate. side note: how beautifully wintery is balzac's packaging? i am such a sucker for seasonal designs!

now lets get baking because tis the season to be covered in flour & icing sugar every single day. oh i can't wait!
